The Mississippi River is Low

During autumn and winter, the level of the water in the Mississippi lowers. Turtle and his friends go far from the levee, far from where people normally lose their cash in Baton Rouge. Anyone can walk amongst the trees in the mud along the Mississippi during that time. They can also find what else has been lost…

They can find trash down there. They can find catfish skeletons, bottles, glass, tents, tires, rope, fishing line, and sometimes cash lost out there. No one tells all about what they find there, though. Often, they’re too scared. Often, they’re just too sad.

Something that lost its fur – replaced with moss and branches – that lost its camaraderie, slumbers out of the woods at night. These floating forms bark in some odd manner. The sounds they make… are like foghorns and dogs in pain.

In the morning, bullfrogs croak: wawaron.
