Azure Eyes in Freeland

A plank on concrete… will not attract what lives in Freeland. It doesn’t want hard materials. It’s gotta fill it’s stomach with flowing liquid… but not the liquid found in Hammer or Thompson’s Creek. What runs in blue blood people – azure blood. Frightened, some hunters killed two to three black bears in the region, but they didn’t know that wasn’t what was hunting them.

They get really big, like a car, those beasts hiding in the woods. They can climbs trees, lounge in them, watch life pass below. A long time ago these beasts were just normal black bears. But nobles, people with property and money, came to build plantations and erect lots of buildings. It really bothered the black bears because they were no longer able to live without worry. Without fear.

One day, a well-dressed man came into the woods. He was cutting trees to build another house on his 100 aprents. One group of bears heard echoes of an axe striking treetrunks. They got down from the canopy to stop the man. They roared to make him run away. The man was frightened, of course, then he struck one bear in the head with his axe. The poor black bear fell there, dying right next to his comrads.

The rest of the group of black bears started attacking the man. They ripped open his arms and legs, cut up his fingers and toes, ate his eyes, and drank his blood. For some months afterward, the bears, full of distrust, would come down to defend the woods, either by eating folks who were hunting them or brutalizing folks who were cutting wood to build houses and cabins or massacre masters and bosses on plantations. Same as the snails in the Coosa, they evolved rapidly: the bears grew a second pair of eyes… which turned azure sometime afterward. Then all their four eyes turned azure.

Bears with azure eyes aren’t bad. They’re just protecting their land. They want it to remain free, free from folks with azure blood. Hunters think it was materials for building something that would make the bears attack. In fact, it was their blood that the bears were able to see with their new azure eyes. It shines like a ray of sunlight during the day – as well as at night. Now, no curse shall fall on these bears because they’ll see each and every azure blood that passes trying to do their worst.
